How to extend your car’s life

Posted by:AutoMoney

Owning a car is a big responsibility, but it is also a big job to keep it in the best condition possible. Having your car in full working order is beneficial for when you want to sell it as well as for day to day running.

Switch on the air con

Although you may think that the air conditioning only needs to be on during hot days, it is worth switching the air conditioning on during the colder months too. This is to make sure that the mechanisms and cooling system are ticking over and will therefore be working when you actually need them to! If the parts are not used they can seize up, costing you a pretty penny at a garage, or worse -  the fact that you have to drive on a hot day with no cool air!

Wash no matter what the weather

It is easy to picture yourself washing your car in the summer sun, but would you be happy to do it in the winter, or raining months? Not just for cosmetic reasons, washing your car is a great way to keep your car in the best possible condition during its lifetime. Washing your car, especially in winter, is more about protecting it from rust, grit and corrosion. The salt that is applied to the roads when ice is predicted can be bad for the undercarriage and paintwork of your car.

Cars need protection too

It isn’t just your skin that needs protection in the sun, the paintwork on your car is also susceptible to spoil in the sunlight. If you cannot keep your car in a garage during the summer it is well worth investing in a cover for the car. A cover will keep the car and its paintwork free from bird droppings, dirty water and moisture – all of which can seriously affect the paint work - as well as protecting the car from the sun itself!
