New DVLA changes could cause trouble for hiring vehicles abroad

Posted by:AutoMoney

New DVLA changesAs of the 8th June, motorists can expect to have to deal with some shake up changes applied by the DVLA – but before you start panicking, it will only have an impact if you are planning on driving abroad.

It is feared that motorists could be left stranded overnight in foreign countries on the 8th June as the new laws come into place.

The DVLA have taken the decision to scrap the paper counterpart driving licence, which means that all the information held on it, such as penalty points and fines, will instead be stored in an online database.

This has a knock on effect, meaning that people wanting to hire cars abroad may face difficulty.

From the 8th June, as well as carrying their plastic driving licence, motorists will also have to collect a special online code from the DVLA website BEFORE they travel. Along with their driver number and other licence details, a National Insurance number will be needed to get the code. But, the code will only last for a total of 72 hours before expiring, which means that motorists will have to log in again later in the holiday if they wish to drive in the second week of a two week holiday, for example.

But the disruption doesn’t end there. Hire companies will then have to speak to someone from a special dedicated hotline to verify details and endorsements before the hiring of a vehicle can be completed. However, experts and motorists alike are concerned that this new system will have detrimental implications, causing confusion and delays to both drivers abroad and the hire companies.

If you are planning on travelling abroad after 8th June 2015 and wish to hire a vehicle, it is thought that it is still worth taking the paper counterpart licence, as some foreign hire companies will still like to check the paper licence, and some companies may well insist on seeing it.

And of course, the hotline for hire companies to phone will only be open during working hours, so trying to hire a vehicle outside of these times will be near on impossible, leading to long waits, delays, and possible long queues.
