What to look for in breakdown cover

When you are a car owner, one of the most important things to have is valid breakdown cover. You just can’t predict when an accident or incident will happen and when you might need to use it. 

But what sort of things should you look for before purchasing? We have a few top tips:

Value for money

Of course, one of the most important things has to be, is it value for money. No one wants to spend more than they have to, so shop around to find the right deal for you! As with most insurance, breakdown cover will cost slightly more if you elect to pay monthly, so if you can afford to, it is best to pay it off in one go for the whole year. 

Recovery times

Check the recovery times before you sign on the dotted line. Most breakdown providers aim to be with you within 60 minutes, but never assume, always ask! Roadside breakdown needs to be speedy due to the conditions and the danger aspect. Also, ask about how they prioritise what they consider vulnerable cases – women on their own, motorway break downs, and breaking down with children present in the car are generally considered ‘vulnerable’ cases. 

Home assistance

Sometimes you don’t even get the chance to leave home, your car just doesn’t start or breaks down without leaving your driveway! Cover in these situations is called home start, although it can also be called home relay, or home assistance and we think it is well worth adding onto your cover. 

Another reason for considering home start is that without it, most standard policies will not cover you for a breakdown close to your home address - usually up to a mile. So if you broke down just up the street on your journey, you would not be covered. Hence, if you think this may happen to you, then you should really consider taking a policy with home start. 

365 days

Driving is a round the year task, and your breakdown cover needs to reflect that. Look for a provider that has a 24 hour, 365 day policy - meaning that you would always be able to reach someone if you needed too. A UK call centre is also a bonus in our eyes. 

And remember...

Once you have breakdown cover, you will be issued with a welcome pack and your card – make sure you keep the card with you in your car or purse as you will need the information on it when you phone to lodge a breakdown. And save the contact number in your phone and on a piece of paper kept in the car. You never know when you might need it.
