Police to come down harder on those who marginally speed

Posted by:AutoMoney

With technology always changing and evolving, it was only going to be a matter of time before it was applied to the roads! Well, it seems like this is going to happen sooner rather than later, with the news that motorists are set to be caught speeding if they go over the speed limit by one mile per hour.

For years and years, motorists have relied on the ‘small margin of error’ when related to speeding crimes, which meant that if you were driving for 30mph, you would be given 10% of the maximum speed limit PLUS 2mph before you were classed as speeding. This was due to the lack of sophistication with the cameras used by the police, but all that is going to change!

Due to technology, speed cameras are now incredibly accurate and more reliable, so expect a fine and penalty points through your door if you are over the speed limit.

Police chiefs believe that this clamp down will help with the number of accidents on our roads, as well as the number of fatalities, although the president of the AA, Edmund King isn’t too sure.

“We need drivers to concentrate on what is on the road ahead of them, not always looking at the speedo.” King goes on to say that if a driver goes over the speed limit by 2mph that is better than causing an accident due to not looking at the road.

In Scotland, the police force have announced that they are going to introduce these news rules with immediate effect, and that all drivers will face a warning for exceeding the limit, even by 1mph.

If the driver is caught speeding by a small margin, they will be handed a £100 fine and penalty points. If the speed is dangerously excessive, the punishment, fine and number of penalty points will be increased accordingly.

Police forces in England and Wales are said to be monitoring the roll out in Scotland and will make a decision accordingly, but we shouldn’t be surprised if we see this rolled out at some point later this year.
