Increase in the number of cars fitted with a black box

Posted by:AutoMoney

A recent study has shown that nearly half a million motorists in the UK have opted to have a telematics black box fitted in their cars, as part of their insurance policies – hopefully enabling them to get cheaper premiums.

A large number of insurance firms now offer this black box service, allowing customers to have the device fitted to their cars, offering them the chance of having lower premiums according to how they drive. These boxes are fitted by the insurance company and can monitor speed, acceleration, time of journey as well as braking habits. This data then allows the insurance company the ability to build a ‘driver profile’ on the individual.

Popular with new and young drivers, the potential savings are huge with some insurance companies offering up to 25% for a good driver profile.

And it seems people are increasingly open to the idea of this Big Brother like watchful eye.

In 2009, only 12,000 motorists had a black box fitted with the number rising to 323,000 by the end of 2014. The end of 2015 showed figures of 455,000 black boxes fitted – the big question is, will 2016 continue to show an increase?
